Increased poaching is the cause of the extinction of this male species. He was coveted on the pretext that his horn had medicinal virtues and he was the last of his species. Following complications due to his age, he died on March 20, 2018 at the age of 45 in Kenya.
#2. JAVA TIGER
Originally from the island of Java in Indonesia, it was declared extinct in 1994. Discovered in 1494 during Christophe Colombe’s second voyage to the new world. It was hunted from 1700 to 1900 for its skin used as clothing and its fat used as a component of oil. It was another victim of urbanization and tourism development. The last time this animal was seen was in 1952 between Jamaica and Mexico.

Also known as the “American eastern cougar”, it was officially declared extinct in the United States in 2016. It had been threatened since 1973. The species has suffered from intensive hunting and lack of resources.

This subspecies of the brown bear became extinct at the end of the 19th century. The last specimen was killed at the Morocco-Algerian border in the 1870s. He was the only bear native to Africa.
