Mark Davis Career
Career Davis started his career life in the retail department of the Raiders business, where he helped in the development of the Raider Image stores. Moreover, he developed the muff-style hand warmer for football in 1986 while working in the Raiders’ equipment department. While still working there, he represented Raiders player Cliff Branch in negotiating a contract with the team. The negotiations ended up in a deal that included an annuity, which lasted until 2019 when the player died. This action of representing a player in contract negotiations led him to be kicked out by his father from their home. His father blamed him for being too close to the players. From there henceforth, he lived with Cliff Branch after the team moved to Los Angeles.
Mark Davis’s father, Al Davis, died in 2011. Al Davis had been the Chief Executive officer of the Raiders since 1972 till his death. Mark Davis and his mother inherited ownership of the Raiders. Mark became the operating head of the franchise henceforth. Mark and his mother own 47 percent of the Raider’s shares. As the operating head, Mark controls all the team’s operations and represents it in owners’ meetings. During his tenure on the team, he focuses on business matters and leaves on-field matters to the football operations staff. His mode of management contrasts that of his father, who was known to be one of the most hands-on owners in professional sports. Mark Davis greatly honors the legacy that his father left, and he actively protects it. However, in 2013, the team’s public relations director criticized Davis’s father in a sports-illustrated article. The criticism made Mark Davis fire the director immediately. Davis took the challenge to pursue the construction of a new stadium for the raiders, an issue his father was unable to solve. His initial desire was to keep the Raiders in Oakland. Still, due to the lack of a stadium, he started to communicate with representatives of Los Angeles, San Antonio, Las Vegas, and other cities. Davis’ desire for the Raiders to own a stadium has seen him go through negotiations, some of which he has lost. Finally, on March 27, 2017, the National Football League officially approved the Raiders to move from Oakland to Las Vegas in a 31-1 vote, which assured them of a new stadium in the process. Mark Davis is also the owner of the Las Vegas Aces of the Woman’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). He purchased the team from MGM Resorts International. The purchase was approved by the WNBA and NBA on February 12, 2021. Before buying the Aces, Mark was the team’s seasonal ticket holder and frequently attended their home games.
