In the Ross Hunter NBC television movie, The Best Place to Be from that same year, he also portrayed the role of Donna Reed’s son.
Then, in 1980, he produced two CBS made-for-TV movies, Father Figure and Young Love, both starring Hal Linden and Valerie Bertinelli. Hutton earned the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 1980s Ordinary People for his role as Conrad Jarrett. In addition, because of his work, he was given the Golden Globe for Best Male New Star in Motion Picture.
