On November 26, 2008, ten terrorists from Pakistan’s Lakshya-e-Taiba and another Islamic terrorist group attempted an attack in India.
The terrorist had accounted numerous strikes in Mumbai and had broken into a number of well-known buildings, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and the Oberoi Trident Nariman House, where they had taken many hostages. The 51 Special Action Group (51 SAG), a special force sent to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to free the hostages, was led by Sandeep Unnikrishnan.
Sandeep Unnikrishnan had rescued the hostages on the fifth and sixth floors of the hotel after breaking into it with Top 10 Commando. To save Commando Sunil Kumar Yadav, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan risked his life and while fighting the attackers, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was shot and injured in the left arm.
Because of many wounds and bleeding, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan died while fighting with the terrorists. The next day, his body was found in a pool of blood in the hotel. Later, Sandeep Unnikrishnan was awarded India’s highest peacetime gallantry award Ashok Chakra on the 26th of January in the year 2009 by president Pratibha Patil.
According to his father K Unnikrishnan, a retired employee of the Indian Space Research Organisation told that Sandeep Unnikrishnan had called him on the 26th of November in 2008 at the Midnight and told him to watch the television about the unraveling terror in Mumbai. According to him, that was the last conversation between him and his son Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan.
