Rafter began his professional career in 1991. He won the men’s singles title at the US Open twice and finished second at Wimbledon twice during his career. His serve-and-volley style of play was well-known.

In 1993, at Wimbledon, Rafter won his first tour-level match. He advanced to the third round before falling to Andre Agassi in the final. In Indianapolis, he also advanced to the semi-finals. He beat Pete Sampras in three close sets before falling in the semi-finals against Boris Becker in the quarterfinals. Rafter concluded 1993 with a 66th place result.

In Manchester, Rafter won his first professional singles championship in 1994. Before 1997, he had only won one ATP singles championship.
