On October 5, 1967, Rex Chapman was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Wayne Chapman, Rex’s father, won two NCAA Division II national championships while coaching Kentucky Wesleyan College and competing in the American Basketball Association.

Chapman and his sister Jenny “used to pray that Wayne’s teams would win” so that the atmosphere of the home would not be tense, while his mother Laura would try to ease the tension. Chapman and his father had a tumultuous relationship.

Chapman excelled while playing for the Kentucky Wildcats. He set a record for points by a freshman, averaging 16 points per game and was awarded Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Year, and guided the Wildcats to the 1987 NCAA tournament. His second year average increased by 19 points. With the assistance of teammates like Winston Bennett, a future journeyman in the NBA, Chapman helped Kentucky win the SEC title[a] with a 27-6 record.

The Wildcats earned the No. 2 seed in the South region of the 1988 NCAA tournament after being ranked as the sixth-best college basketball team in the country by the Associated Press and United Press International.

Chapman scored over 16 points per game while playing 68 games for the Suns in 1997–98. He played 38 games during the strike-shortened 1999 season before becoming hurt once more. Chapman developed severe nerve pains in his foot while playing for the Suns. He underwent seven surgeries and started taking Vicodin on a regular basis. Chapman retired after 53 games in the 1999–2000 season as a result of several injuries and deteriorating play.

Prior to retiring, Chapman underwent an urgent appendectomy in the spring. He was given OxyContin as a post-operative prescription, which led to an escalation in his drug use in part because it also reduced his social anxiety.

Chapman then worked as a studio commentator for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament broadcast in March 2022.

In September 2022, entertainment business journal Variety revealed Chapman’s podcast, “Charges with Rex Chapman”, would be turned into a TV show. The new series will be produced by Steve Nash’s CTRL Media and Portal A, just like the podcast.
